Carolyn Westbrook and Canton Treasures!

Last month two close friends and I decided, at the last minute, to make a trip to First Monday Trade Days in Canton. For those of you who don’t live in Texas or Louisiana, First Monday is a huge flea market that opens the week-end before the first Monday of every month in Canton, Texas. Although it is not as big as the Round Top show, it is worth the drive for a day, or maybe even two, of treasure hunting. Vendors come from all around the area to sell handmade items, market finds, vintage treasures and antiques.

What a wonderful surprise to find that Carolyn Westbrook, designer and author was one of the vendors this month!  I just love her work and her attention to detail! I keep a copy of her book close at hand all the time. It is full of wonderful inspiration and fabulous photos! If you don’t have a copy, you will definitely want to get one!

I snapped a few pictures from my copy to share with you here. I just love the color of these walls, a soft blue with just the right touch of green. Look at he break of the bed skirt! So relaxed and luxurious! Notice the boxed pillow with its crisp, ruffled edges. Westbrook has packed so many details into this room that it would take me hours to mention them all!

This is one of my very favorite shots in the book. The mix of elements grabs the viewer’s eye for hours. Well, in my case, days! When I purchased my copy, I booked marked this page and poured over it every day for a couple of weeks. I still love to look at the juxtaposition used here, highlighting the frivolous French Louis lines with the rough textural shapes of the baskets used as tables.  Then there is, what looks to be, a metal cabinet sitting between the two French chairs, which are upholstered with grain sacks and some kind of luxe fabric, maybe velvet! There are shots of silver studded throughout the room. The staircase makes a strong industrial statement and the ceiling, made of reclaimed materials, adds warmth and texture to the space. And last, but not least, I just love how the zebra rug grounds the room.

Love the use of empty frames here, accenting the garden vessel brimming with blossoms. They sit on top of an antique table with perfectly gilded carving.  This vignette is a work of art itself.

And, another wonderful vignette… All my favorite elements… Old framed mirror, crystal chandelier, garden urns, freshly harvested roses, a perfectly crusty angel and a cloche protecting a cluster of grapes atop an ornate pedestal.

So, back to the Canton trip and my find for the day… Remember the boxed pillow on the center of the bed in the pale blue room that I showed above? When I spied these in Carolyn’s booth, I knew they would be a perfect addition to the newly painted guest room! She is one talented designer…

I love her design…

I love her workmanship…

And,I love her attention to detail!

But, most of all, I love the way these pillows look in my home!

And, I think Albert does too!

I highly recommend Carolyn’s book, The French Inspired Home. If you are a lover of French, all things vintage, and the laid back vibe of a Texas home, then this is a must have for you!
